Jesse Edwards faces up on Gardner and tries to drive to the basket, but Edwards is called for a charge. Virginia works the ball around the zone and Clark finds Armaan Franklin for an open three-pointer and Franklin drills it from the right wing. Vander Plas gets the ball at the free throw line and kicks to Franklin, who hits another three-pointer to give UVA the lead. Edwards is fouled by Shedrick in the low post and Edwards makes 1/2 free throws. Virginia turns it over and Mintz takes the ball the length of the court for a layup to tie the game. Beekman fouls Mintz on a mid-range jumper, but Mintz misses both free throws and it remains a tied ball game. Beekman attacks the basket and draws a foul on Edwards, his fourth personal foul. Beekman makes both free throws and Virginia leads 59-57. Edwards stays in the game and draws another foul as Vander Plas was a little over-aggressive with his double-team.

Mintz completes the three-point play and it's back to a four-point game. Gardner blows a wide open layup and then Edwards passes out of the double team again and Chris Bell hits the three-pointer, a five-point swing. Virginia forces a Syracuse shot-clock violation thanks to some stingy on-ball defense by Beekman on Mintz. Shedrick fouls Bell on a three-point attempt and Bell makes all three free throws. It's 9-0 run for Syracuse and the Orange have reclaimed the lead. Vander Plas tries to send a pass down low to Shedrick but Shedrick turned his head thinking Vander Plas was shooting and the pass flies out of bounds for a turnover. Edwards goes to work on Shedrick and scores inside plus a foul on Shedrick. Edwards completes the three-point play and it's a 12-0 run for Syracuse over the last three minutes. Clark's long jumper is off the mark but Vander Plas is there for the putback, ending the Syracuse run.

Both teams shoot the ball at a high percentage in the first half, with Virginia shooting 62% from the floor and Syracuse shooting 64%. It's a 6-0 run for Virginia to retake the lead. Both teams come up empty on consecutive possessions and the Orange have gone nearly four minutes without scoring.

Virginia 29, Syracuse 26 | 3:57 1H

Vander Plas sends an accurate skip pass to Isaac McKneely, who quickly pulls the trigger and drains the three-pointer from the left wing. Charlottesville native Justin Taylor is left open on the perimeter and he hits the three-pointer. McKneely's lob is too tall for Shedrick and then Syracuse scores as Taylor pump fakes and hits a short jumper. Syracuse gets another stop and then Mintz hits a mid-range jumper to give the Orange their first lead of the game. McKneely's three is off the mark and Mintz scores again to cap a 9-0 run for Syracuse. Clark turns the ball over and Mintz had a chance for another bucket in transition but his layup is off the mark, giving the Cavaliers a 5-on-4 opportunity on the other end and they capitalize as Kihei Clark drains a wide open three-pointer to even things up at 26-26.
