Final Score: Virginia 68, Virginia Tech 74

Virginia Tech inbounds to Sean Pedulla, who is fouled immediately by Kihei Clark. Pedulla makes both free throws and the Hokies lead by six. Beekman's three-pointer is off the mark, but Gardner is fouled on a putback attempt and makes both free throws to make it a four-point game. Franklin fouls Pedulla again and he makes both free throws again to essentially seal the game. Franklin misses a three-pointer and the clock expires. Virginia Tech defeats Virginia 74-68.

Beekman's layup rolls off the front the front of the rim but Gardner is there for the rebound and eventually gets the putback to fall on his second attempt. UVA traps Hunter Cattoor with a double-team and nearly forces a turnover, but Gardner is called for a foul. Cattoor makes the first, but misses the second. Clark shoots an off-balance three-pointer and misses it long. Virginia Tech breaks UVA's quick press and Mutts feeds Basile for a layup. Kihei Clark shoots another contested three-pointer but this time he knocks it down and it's a four-point game with 22 seconds left.

Virginia doubles Justyn Mutts and he throws a pass to a cutting Basile, who scores easily over McKneely at the rim. Virginia Tech beats Virginia's small-ball lineup again and leads 67-61 with 75 seconds left.

Beekman makes both free throws and it's a four-point game. MJ Collins gets around McKneely and drives to the basket and scores over Clark's contest. Beekman drives around a screen and gets to the basket for a layup to respond. Collins takes an elbow from his teammate on that last possession and is taken off the floor with a very bloody nose. 

Virginia 61, Virginia Tech 65 | 1:39 2H

Isaac McKneely sprints off of a screen and drills a heavily-contested three-pointer from the right wing, a much-needed shot for the Cavaliers. Virginia Tech gets a second-chance opportunity but UVA delivers a solid extended defensive possession to keep the Hokies from increasing their lead. Clark throws a cross-court pass in transition to Beekman, who draws a foul on Basile and will shoot two free throws on the other side of the timeout.

Sean Pedulla tries to flop to draw a charge on Beekman, but he is called for a blocking foul instead, giving him four personal fouls. Beekman backs down Collins and leans in for a layup off the glass. With Virginia switching on ball-screens, Virginia Tech gets Grant Basile on Ryan Dunn down low and Basile scores with a reverse layup. Gardner is called for a foul while going for an offensive rebound, sending Hunter Cattoor to the free throw line, but he misses the front end of the one-and-one. Somehow, UVA ends up having Clark guarding Basile down low. Virginia's entire defense collapses and Basile kicks out to Cattoor, who knocks down his third three-pointer of the second half. Gardner draws a foul, but he misses both free throws. Gardner immediately atones for the missed free throws by picking off a pass and taking it the other way for a crowd-silencing dunk. Basile pops free off of a screen and hits a three-pointer from the top of the key, bringing the crowd back to life as Virginia Tech goes up by nine points with less than three and a half minutes left in the game.

Tony Bennett inserts the freshmen duo of Isaac McKneely and Ryan Dunn and they immediately make an impact. McKneely comes up with a defensive rebound and then Beekman throws an alley-oop to Dunn for the dunk. Hunter Cattoor answers with a three-pointer on the other end. Vander Plas is called for a foul, sending Mutts to the line for a one-and-one as Virginia Tech is already in the bonus. UVA has been called for seven fouls in the second half as compared to just one for the Hokies. Mutts makes both free throws and Virginia Tech leads by nine 51-42. Beekman drives to the basket and draws a foul on Pedulla, but Beekman makes just 1/2 free throws. UVA miscommunicates on defense and Pedulla is given an open lane to the basket and Beekman fouls Pedulla, who makes 1/2 free throws. Beekman curls around a screen and drives on Cattoor before banking in a shot off the glass. With the shot-clock winding down, Hunter Cattoor pulls up from well beyond the arc and sinks it, giving the Hokies their largest lead of the game at ten points. Kihei Clark draws a foul on Pedulla and swishes two free throws. Basile nearly had another dunk but Ryan Dunn rotates over and blocks the shot. Beekman gets into the paint and kicks out to Kihei Clark, who splashes the three-pointer and Virginia is back within five points.

Mutts posts up on Beekman and goes strong to the basket through a double team for a layup plus a foul on Gardner. Mutts converts the three-point play at the free throw line. Franklin drives to the basket late in the shot-clock and dishes to Gardner, who finishes plus a foul on Mutts. Gardner misses the free throw. Lynn Kidd briefly loses control of the ball in the paint but he recollects and scores off the glass. Pedulla posts up on Clark and dips underneath him for a layup plus a foul on Clark. Pedulla finishes the three-point play at the free throw line and the Hokie lead is back up to six points.

Jayden Gardner slips a screen and rolls to the basket for a layup off the feed from Beekman. Cattoor is forced to drive on Beekman late in the shot clock and he can't even get the shot off as Beekman blocks the shot. The ball comes to Clark who pushes the ball up the floor and sends a bounce pass to Gardner in transition for a layup, capping a 6-0 run for UVA. Gardner is up to 12 points and Virginia has tied the game at 38-38.

Grant Basile opens the scoring in the second half by faking a handoff and bursting to the basket for an uncontested dunk. Virginia gets a second-chance opportunity and Clark drives past Collins and gets to the basket for a layup. Justyn Mutts gets the ball in the low block and gets around Vander Plas for a layup. Basile passes out of a double team and Mutts times his cut perfectly, receiving the pass and throwing down another dunk. Clark gets inside for another layup and Tony Bennett quickly calls timeout, as the Hokies are still getting whatever they want inside the UVA defense with well-timed cuts.

A second-chance opportunity for Virginia leads to Jayden Gardner drawing a foul and making both free throws, pulling the Cavaliers to within two points. Virginia defends Virginia Tech well on the final possession and Grant Basile misses a tough jumper just before the buzzer. The Hokies take a 32-30 lead into the halftime break after leading by as many as nine points.

MJ Collins beats Franklin on a backdoor cut and Mutts finds him for an easy dunk. UVA turns the ball over and Mutts throws a long pass down to Collins, who draws a foul and makes 1/2 free throws. Vander Plas sends a pass down low to a cutting Franklin, who finishes the layup plus a foul on Cattoor, his second personal foul. Franklin misses the ensuing free throw. Franklin picks Collins' pocket and takes it down the floor and tries to throw down a dunk but misses it off the back iron. Clark's three-pointer is off the mark but Gardner positions himself perfectly for the easy putback. Clark dribbles to the free throw line and then elevates for a step-back jumper. Justyn Mutts drives on Vander Plas and powers to the basket for a layup. Beekman hangs in the air after driving to the basket and gets a short floater to fall off the rim. Beekman nearly steals the ball from Pedulla, but Pedulla gets it back and scores. Isaac McKneely pulls up from well beyond the arc and drills the three-pointer. Pedulla drives to the basket and scores again. He already has 14 points after scoring just 10 in the entire first matchup against Virginia.

Sean Pedulla draws a foul on Clark and makes a pair of free throws. Reece Beekman cuts down the lane and maneuvers to the basket for a layup. Lynn Kidd gets a short hook shot to fall in the paint. Isaac McKneely drives to the rack and throws down a dunk, but the attempt rattles around the rim and McKneely was still hanging on the rim, so Ted Valentine waives off the dunk for basket interference. Lynn Kidd gets free under the basket and scores again. Armaan Franklin backs down Cattoor, who tries to flop for the charge call, but is whistled for a block. Franklin misses the first free throw, but makes the second. Vander Plas plays great defense on Mutts, who air-balls a short hook shot. Franklin comes free off a screen at the top of the key and splashes the catch-and-shoot three-pointer. Sean Pedulla answers with a pull-up three from the right wing over Clark. Virginia turns the ball over and Virginia Tech shares the ball in transition, leading to a layup for Mutts. Clark chases down a long rebound and feeds the ball up ahead to McKneely, who got up the floor ahead of the defense and scores with an easy layup.

Reece Beekman is fouled by Pedulla and makes both free throws. Basile misses a low-percentage three-pointer late in the shot clock but Justyn Mutts out-muscles Ryan Dunn for the offensive rebound and putback.

Justyn Mutts rolls to the basket out of a screen and scores at the rim to get the scoring started. Jayden Gardner pulls up from the right elbow and gets a friendly roll to get UVA on the board. Gardner loses track of Grant Basile at the top of the key and Basile knocks down a catch-and-shoot three. Kihei Clark answers with a three-pointer of his own from the top of the key. Sean Pedulla cuts to the basket and gets the pass and finishes at the rim past Clark. Pedulla comes free around a screen and hits a three to put Virginia Tech up 10-5. Gardner cuts down the lane and Ben Vander Plas finds him for the layup. Reece Beekman is all over Hunter Cattoor on the catch and Cattoor's desperation shot catches all air for a shot-clock violation.
