Final Score: Notre Dame 55, Virginia 57

The Fighting Irish get a golden opportunity at the end. Wertz misses the second free throw and the rebound is batted out perfectly to Dane Goodwin on the left wing. Goodwin a 39.2% three-point shooter, gets a wide open look from three and Virginia gets very fortunate as Goodwin's attempt is off the mark. For the second game in a row, UVA escapes with a very close win that should not have been that close.

Notre Dame fouls Kihei Clark, who goes to the line for a one-and-one. Clark swishes both free throws and UVA leads by three. Dane Goodwin attempts a three-pointer but Ryan Dunn is all over it with a very solid contest to force a miss. Gardner grabs the rebound and is fouled by Cormac Ryan. Gardner misses the front and of the one-and-one and it remains a one possession game with 10 seconds left. Gardner fouls Trey Wertz, who goes to the line for a one-and-one with 3.9 seconds remaining. Clark's layup attempt is altered at the rim by Laszewski and Notre Dame has a chance to tie the game. Kihei Clark is fouled by JJ Starling and goes 1/2 from the free throw line. Jayden Gardner throws a beautiful cross-court pass to Ben Vander Plas from the low block to the opposite corner and Vander Plas buries the three-pointer. That gave Virginia an eight-point lead, but Nate Laszewski responds right away with a three-pointer of his own. Goodwin backs down Beekman in the paint and hits a very tough fadeaway jumper to get the Irish back within three points. After UVA went more than two and a half minutes without scoring, Kihei Clark ends that drought by driving past Laszewski and getting to the basket for a layup late in the shot clock. Marcus Hammond drives on Franklin and rises for a short floater in the lane. UVA is clinging to a 55-52 lead with 2:16 remaining.

Jayden Gardner misses a point-blank layup attempt and then Notre Dame scores to open the half as Cormac Ryan curls around a screen and hits a fadeaway jumper from just inside the arc. Nate Laszewski draws a foul on Vander Plas and makes both free throws to tie the game. Notre Dame is on an 11-2 run stretching back to the end of the first half. UVA turns the ball over and then Laszewski drives on Vander Plas and scores off the glass with his left hand to give the Irish their first lead since early in the first half. Clark gets the ball inside and makes a nice pass to Gardner, who finishes with a short floater. That assist was Clark's third in the game and 684th of his career, passing John Crotty for most all-time in Virginia basketball history. Virginia plays a solid defensive possession and Jayden Gardner contests Laszewski's late fadeaway jumper to force an air-ball and a shot-clock violation. Virginia presses the issue off of a defensive rebound and Beekman finds Armaan Franklin cutting down the lane for a dunk. Laszewski passes out of a double-team and Notre Dame works the ball around to Dane Goodwin for an open three-pointer to put the Irish back in front. Armaan Franklin knocks down a catch-and-shoot three from the right wing off the feed from Clark. Trey Wertz drives on Clark from the baseline and scores easily off the glass.

Notre Dame 36, Virginia 36 | 14:13 2H

McKneely completes the three-point play at the free throw line and Virginia has its largest lead at nine points. McKneely misses an open three-pointer and Notre Dame pushes the ball up the floor quickly off the defensive rebound, leading to a clean look for Cormac Ryan, who knocks down the transition three. McKneely misses another three and Notre Dame beats UVA down the floor again as Ryan gets the ball down low to Nate Laszewski for an easy layup. Notre Dame dropped into a zone defense over the last few possessions and had some success stopping the UVA offense, leading to that quick 5-0 run. Virginia manages to bust the zone defense this time, as Kihei Clark gets the ball inside and hits a relatively open jumper from the left elbow. Notre Dame gets the last possession of the half and Marcus Hammond is able to drive past McKneely for a layup. Virginia led by as many as nine, but takes just a 29-25 lead into the halftime break.

Notre Dame 25, Virginia 29 | Halftime

Clark misses the first, but makes the second free throw. Virginia is 4/6 so far from the charity stripe today. Trey Wertz flops in the post and is rewarded with an offensive foul call on Jayden Gardner, his second personal. Notre Dame has gone more than six minutes without scoring, but UVA has not taken advantage, as the Cavaliers haven't scored in nearly three minutes themselves. Virginia finally ends that drought as Franklin finds a cutting Vander Plas down the lane for a layup. Little-used forward Matt Zona is the one to finally break the drought for the Irish, knocking down a three from the top of the key off a pass from Wertz. Isaac McKneely drives past his defender and scores off the glass plus a foul on Wertz.

Notre Dame 18, Virginia 26 | 2:21 1H

Isaac McKneely checks into the game and plays great on-ball defense right away to force a Notre Dame turnover as Trey Wertz dribbles the ball off his own foot and out of bounds. Reece Beekman comes off a screen and bursts to the rim for an explosive two-hand jam. He looks much better today than he did on Wednesday at Louisville. Clark gets the ball on the left elbow, faces up on the 6'8" Lubin, and drives right by him for a layup. Virginia delivers another solid possession of defense and has now held Notre Dame scoreless for the last 3:17. Kihei Clark drives past JJ Starling and Starling fouls Clark on his layup attempt.

Notre Dame 15, Virginia 21 | 7:35 1H

Beekman is fouled inside by Lubin and goes 1/2 from the free throw line. Kadin Shedrick checks into the game and immediately picks up his first foul as he tried to block off Laszewski on the baseline. Laszewski makes both free throws. Shedrick atones for the foul with an offensive rebound and that leads to a three-pointer from Kihei Clark, who pulled up from the corner with a hand in his face and buried the shot. Dane Goodwin gets open and knocks down a three-pointer off the feed from Trey Wertz, but the Cavaliers respond with a three-pointer of their own as Clark passes to Reece Beekman, who knocks down the triple from the left wing. It's become a three-point shooting contest in JPJ, as Nate Laszewski drains a three and then Armaan Franklin responds with another three-pointer off a great find from Vander Plas. Dane Goodwin finds his way inside the paint and hits a short floater. Shedrick gets called for his second foul for colliding with a Notre Dame player away from the ball.

Notre Dame 15, Virginia 17 | 10:19 1H

Virginia gets two very good looks on its first two possessions but Ben Vander Plas misses a wide open three-pointer and Jayden Gardner can't get his layup to fall. UVA's defense comes up with a couple of stops and then Kihei Clark gets inside and draws a foul, making both free throws. With the shot-clock winding down, Nate Laszewski drives inside and kicks out to Cormac Ryan, who buries the three from the top of key to get the Irish on the board. Reece Beekman answers on the other end with a fallaway jumper, a great sign for Beekman after he scored just seven total points over the last two games. Marcus Hammond elevates over Clark and knocks down a short jumper. Dane Goodwin finds Ven-Allen Lubin underneath for what appears to be an open dunk but Vander Plas comes down at the last second and blocks the attempt from behind. Vander Plas follows that up by knocking down a three-pointer from the right wing off a feed from Beekman.
