The Cavaliers have suffered a late casualty to the NCAA transfer portal. Virginia graduate defensive end Hunter Stewart has entered the transfer portal, as first reported by On3's Matt Zenitz on Wednesday afternoon.

A 6'3", 242-pound native of Alexandria, Virginia, Stewart redshirted his first season at UVA in 2019 and then appeared in 25 games over the next three seasons, totaling 47 tackles. Stewart was key cog in Virginia's linebacker unit in 2021, appearing in 11 games, including five starts and finishing with 37 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, and two sacks. He appeared in only four games this season, totaling six tackles.

Stewart was in line to be one of Virginia's more versatile defenders in 2023, getting reps at both defensive end and at the Bandit linebacker position. Now, Stewart is in the transfer portal and will look to bring that versatility to a new college football program.

The spring FBS transfer portal window was from April 15-30, but graduate transfers can enter the portal at any time. Stewart enters the portal as a grad transfer and has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Virginia has had two scholarship players enter the transfer portal this spring, as Stewart joins safety Cam'Ron Kelly, who transferred to Louisville just a few months after transferring to UVA from North Carolina.
