Virginia Loses Recruiting Battle for Three-Star In-State Quarterback
Virginia lost a key recruiting battle in the class of 2024 as three-star quarterback and Virginia native Khristian Martin announced his commitment to Maryland over UVA on Sunday.
A 6'4" quarterback and dual-sport athlete out of Highland Springs High School in Virginia, Martin held offers from more than a dozen programs, including Maryland, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Texas A&M and Indiana. Martin also took visits to Alabama, Penn State, Ohio State, and other major programs.
In his junior season at Highland Springs, Martin threw for 30 touchdowns to just one interception and amassed nearly 2,400 passing yards. He also rushed for 773 yards and 13 touchdowns on 95 carries and led his team to the state championship. According to 247Sports, Martin is rated the No. 68 quarterback in the country in the class of 2024 and the No. 34 overall recruit from the state of Virginia.
Martin took multiple visits to Virginia, including one at the end of June, making the Cavaliers one of the top contenders in his recruitment. Ultimately, however, UVA fell short of snagging the in-state quarterback, who chose to commit to Maryland and head coach Mike Locksley.
Virginia will have to look elsewhere in the recruiting class of 2024 for a quarterback.
