Virginia's Malik Washington and Jonas Sanker Named First-Team All-ACC
The Atlantic Coast Conference announced the 2023 All-ACC Football Teams on Tuesday and a total of five Virginia Cavaliers were included, headlined by a pair of First-Team All-ACC selections in graduate wide receiver Malik Washington and junior safety Jonas Sanker. Junior wide receiver Malachi Fields, graduate center Brian Stevens, and sixth year defensive tackle Aaron Faumui earned All-ACC honorable mentions.
Voting process: The All-ACC teams were chosen by a voting panel of 51 media members and each of the league’s 14 head coaches for a total of 65 voters. Three points were awarded for each first-team vote, two points for each second-team vote, and one point for each third-team vote.
Malik Washington received 182 total voting points, the most of any offensive player in the conference. He broke UVA's single-season receiving records and his 110 receptions also set the ACC's single-season receptions record and led the country in the regular season. Washington had ten games with at least 100 yards receiving, most in college football this season and more than any other Cavalier has recorded in an entire career.
Jonas Sanker joined Washington in garnering First-Team All-ACC honors, as he led the conference with 6.1 solo tackles per game, a figure that also ranked second in the country. He was third in the ACC in tackling with 107 total tackles, becoming the first Cavalier defensive back to have at least 100 tackles in a season since Quin Blanding did so in 2017.
Malachi Fields posted 58 receptions for 811 yards and five touchdowns, ranking 4th in the ACC in receiving yards, 5th in receiving yards per game, 6th in receptions, and 7th in receptions per game. Fields and Washington had the most productive season by a UVA receiver duo in program history.
Brian Stevens started all 12 games on the offensive line, the first two at guard and the final ten games at center. According to Pro Football Focus, Stevens had the fourth-highest grade among centers in the country and was the top run-blocking center in the conference. Stevens allowed just one sack in the entire season on 476 pass-block snaps, per PFF.
Finally, Aaron Faumui earned an All-ACC honorable mention for the second-straight season after totaling 32 tackles, 13 of which were solo stops, and led UVA with 6.5 tackles for loss. Pro Football Focus graded Faumui as the ACC's highest-graded defensive lineman in terms of run defense, tackling, and pass rush snaps.
