WATCH: Anthony Colandrea Talks Helmet Penalty, Tough Loss to NC State
Anthony Colandrea's unsportsmanlike penalty following an incredible two-point conversion throw was as costly as it was controversial. Technically, it was the right call since Colandrea did remove his own helmet, but as the helmet was already halfway off his head and given the stakes of the game, the refs could have easily let it slide.
Instead, Virginia's thrilling comeback efforts were spoiled as the 15-yard penalty led to a big return on the ensuing kickoff and a 33-yard field goal as time expired gave NC State a wild 24-21 victory over the Cavaliers, who fell to 0-4 on the season.
Colandrea was remorseful following the game, claiming responsibility for the "mistake" of not putting his helmet back on. Hear what the UVA freshman quarterback said about that penalty and the loss to NC State in the video below:
It was still a quality performance from Colandrea, who made another strong case to be Virginia's full-time starter by completing 18 of 30 passes for 271 yards and two touchdowns, but also two interceptions.
We'll see how Tony Elliott and the UVA coaching staff choose to handle their ever-developing quarterback situation between Anthony Colandrea and Tony Muskett next week as they set their sights on a road trip to Boston College, still looking for their first win of the season.
