Virginia men's lacrosse assistant coach Sean Kirwan is reportedly accepting a job to become the next head coach of the Dartmouth men's lacrosse program, as reported by Inside Lacrosse's Ty Xanders on Friday evening.

Kirwan spent the last seven seasons as Virginia's offensive coordinator and served in that role on Lars Tiffany's staff for the last nine seasons, going back to Tiffany's last two years at Brown. In his final season at UVA, Kirwan guided a record-breaking Cavalier offense that ranked No. 1 in the nation scoring 17.24 goals per game and shattered the program record for assists with 195 total team assists this season, a record that had stood since 2006.

Kirwan played college lacrosse at Tufts, where he was an All-American in 2011 and 2012 and helped the team win the NCAA Division III National Championship in 2010. After graduating, Kirwan joined the Tufts coaching staff as an assistant and helped the Jumbos win another national title while scoring 423 goals along the way, which still stands as the most goals scored in a single season by any team in any division of NCAA lacrosse.

Kirwan joined Lars Tiffany's staff at Brown in 2014 and helped coach the Bears to a Final Four appearance in 2016 behind the nation's leading offense at 16.32 goals per game and the Tewaaraton Trophy winner Dylan Molloy. In 2016, Kirwan went with Tiffany and Kip Turner to take over the Virginia men's lacrosse program. Under their watch, the Cavaliers have surged back to the top of the college lacrosse world in the last seven seasons, winning the program's sixth and seventh NCAA national titles in 2019 and 2021 and consistently fielding some of the most prolific offensive attacks in the country.

After proving himself as one of the top assistants in college lacrosse and as one of the best offensive minds in the sport, Sean Kirwan now takes the leap into the head coaching role for the first time, inheriting a Dartmouth program that went 6-6 last season, the first .500 or better season for the Big Green since 2007. At the end of the 2023 season, Dartmouth parted ways with head coach Brendan Callahan, who went 25-71 and 2-40 in the Ivy League.

As for Virginia, Lars Tiffany is now left with a gaping hole on his coaching staff and one which will be difficult to fill.

One of the many supremely talented offensive players to play under Sean Kirwan during his time at Virginia, Connor Shellenberger, wrote a touching message on Twitter thanking Kirwan and wishing him well.
