Virginia Lacrosse Reclaims No. 1 Spot in Inside Lacrosse Media Poll

The Cavaliers are back on top after beating previous No. 1 Notre Dame 15-10 on Saturday

After a brief stint as the No. 3 team in the country, the Cavaliers are back on top. Following a resounding 15-10 victory over previously unbeaten No. 1 Notre Dame on the road on Saturday, Virginia has reclaimed its spot as college lacrosse's No. 1 team in the latest Inside Lacrosse media poll released on Monday.

There was a bit of debate over who would be the new No. 1 this week as the top three teams in the country have now completed the round robin of beating each other. Virginia lost the No. 1 ranking in an overtime loss to Maryland on March 18th, but then beat the new No. 1 Notre Dame, handing the Fighting Irish their first loss in almost a full calendar year. Notre Dame beat Maryland on the road in triple overtime and was the unquestioned No. 1 last week before falling to the Cavaliers by five goals. Maryland beat Virginia in overtime and was ranked No. 2 last week, but the Terps have the loss to Notre Dame as well as a five-goal loss to Loyola back in February on their resume.

The outcome of all of that was that UVA shot back up into the No. 1 spot with 20 first-place votes, leap-frogging Maryland, who received one first-place vote. Notre Dame slid to No. 3 and didn't receive any first-place votes. The three remaining first-place votes went to No. 4 Duke, who has bounced back from a February loss to Jacksonville by winning seven-straight games.

This sets up a third-consecutive top 5 matchup for the Cavaliers, as No. 1 Virginia is set to welcome No. 4 Duke to Charlottesville for an ACC showdown on Friday at 5pm at Klockner Stadium.
