A 6'5", 225-pound right-handed pitcher who is in his second full season at the professional level, Vasil is currently pitching for the Syracuse Mets, the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets. The 23-year-old righty has a 4.37 ERA in 12 appearances this season, recording 66 strikeouts and a 0.99 WHIP (walks and hits per inning pitched) in 57.2 innings. In his minor league career so far, Vasil is 5-5 with a 3.77 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP in 33 games and 136.0 innings pitched. Vasil had a strong start to the season with the Mets' Double-A affiliate, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, as he was named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Month in May after turning in a 2.52 ERA in 25 innings pitched that month. On June 12th, Vasil was called up to the Syracuse Mets.
In three years at Virginia, Vasil appeared in 34 games, 32 of which were starts. In his third and final season at UVA in 2021, Vasil went 7-5 with a 4.52 ERA and ranked fifth in the ACC in strikeouts looking (33), second in starts (16), seventh in wins (7), and 10th in innings pitched (81.2). After helping the Cavaliers reach their fifth College World Series, Vasil was selected by the New York Mets with the 232nd overall pick in the eighth round of the 2021 MLB Draft. A little over two years later, Vasil is one of the top pitchers in New York's farm system and is now being recognized as one of the most promising pitching prospects in the minor leagues by being selected to the All-Star Futures Game.
The 24th edition of the All-Star Futures Game will be played on Saturday, July 8th at 7pm ET at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.
