Former Virginia women's soccer star Emily Sonnett will represent the United States at the FIFA Women's World Cup for the second time. Sonnett was selected to U.S. Women's National Team roster for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup on Wednesday morning.Β

Sonnett has played in 74 matches for the U.S. Women's National Team, tallying one goal and five assists and filling a key role as a back line defender. She was part of the 2019 U.S. Women's National Team that went on to win the FIFA Women's World Cup, appearing in one match in group play. Sonnett figures to have a much larger role this time around, as she was a key contributor in USA's win over Mexico in the 2022 Concacaf Women's Championship, starting and playing the full 90 minutes. When Sonnett makes her next appearance, she will become just the 51st player to earn 75 caps in USWNT history.Β

Sonnett enjoyed a decorated career at Virginia from 2012 to 2015, earning multiple All-American and All-ACC selections. She was the 2015 ACC Defensive Player of the Year, the 2015 ESPNW National Player of the Year, and was selected No. 1 overall in the 2016 National Women's Soccer League Draft.Β

The U.S. Women's National Team put together a video to announce its 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup roster with celebrities and public figures announcing the selection of each player. Famous actress, writer, comedian, producer, and fellow UVA alum Tina Fey announced Sonnett's selection to the team.Β

"USA! UVA! Guess 'Hoos' going to her second World Cup? Congratulations Emily Sonnett on being named to your second World Cup roster," Fey said. "I'm so excited to cheer you on this summer. Go Hoos! Go UVA!"Β

The 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup will be held from July 20th to August 20th and will be jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand.Β
