Kyle Guy and Mike Tobey Sign With EuroLeague Basketball Clubs
Two former Virginia men's basketball stars have signed with clubs in Europe's top professional basketball league. Kyle Guy has joined Panathinaikos Athens and Mike Tobey has signed with Crvena Zvezda. The two clubs are based in Greece and Serbia, respectively, but both teams compete in the EuroLeague, which is widely considered to be the most elite men's basketball league in Europe.
A former All-American and Most Outstanding Player of the 2019 Final Four, Kyle Guy appeared in 53 games in the NBA between 2019 and 2022, but made the move to go overseas last July, signing a one-year contract with Club Joventut Badalona, a Spanish team that plays in EuroCup and the Liga ACB. Guy averaged 11.8 points and 2.6 assists in EuroCup competition, helping Badalona reach the semifinals - and 11.5 points and 2.1 assists in the Liga ACB. In the ACB playoffs, Guy asserted himself as Badalona's most effective scorer, leading the team at 19.8 points per game and shooting a blistering 45.3% from three during an impressive run that saw Guy knock down 21 three-pointers in three games.
Another Spanish basketball club, Valencia, made an offer to Guy at the end of the season, but Badalona matched the offer to retain his rights. On Friday, Panathinaikos Athens paid a buyout to Joventut Badalona to acquire the rights to the 25-year-old Guy, who has signed a two-year contract, sending the former Wahoo to EuroLeague. A powerhouse Greek basketball club, Panathinaikos has won six EuroLeague titles.
Mike Tobey has been playing basketball overseas much longer than Guy. After appearing in a then-program record 138 career games at Virginia, Tobey spent his first season of professional basketball playing for the Charlotte Hornets, appearing in two NBA games, and for Charlotte's G League affiliate the Greensboro Swarm. In 2017, Tobey moved overseas to Spain, where he has played for three different Spanish clubs over the last seven seasons. Most recently playing for FC Barcelona, Tobey averaged 5.9 points and 2.9 rebounds per game in EuroLeague play and 4.5 points and 3.3 rebounds in Liga ACB, with Barcelona going on to win the ACB championship. Tobey has also played in a few international competitions, highlighted by an appearance in the 2020 Summer Olympics with Slovenia, forming a formidable duo with NBA superstar Luke Doncic.
Now, the 28-year-old Tobey will leave Spain to play for Crvena Zvezda, a club based in Belgrade, Serbia that competes in the Serbian League, the ABA League, and EuroLeague.
