In a potential blockbuster NBA trade, the Boston Celtics could be sending former Virginia men's basketball star to the Los Angeles Clippers. Per a report from Shams Charania on Wednesday evening, the Celtics, Clippers, and Washington Wizards have a three-team trade in the works that would send Malcolm Brogdon to the Clippers, Kristaps Porzingis to the Celtics, and Marcus Morris and the No. 30 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft to the Wizards.
If the trade is finalized, Brogdon's time in Boston will come to an end less than a year after the Celtics originally acquired him from the Indiana Pacers. In his 7th season in the NBA, the former Wahoo averaged 14.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.7 assists on 48.4% shooting from the floor and 44.4% from three-point range. Brogdon was named the 2022-2023 NBA Sixth Man of the Year, becoming just the second player in NBA history to win both the Rookie of the Year and Sixth Man of the Year awards in his career.
Brogdon helped the Celtics earn the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference Playoffs and they eventually fell to the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals in seven games. Now, it seems that Celtics president Brad Stevens is looking to shake things up again with the Boston roster, shipping Brogdon out west in order to bring in Kristaps Porzingis, the 7'3" Latvian and former No. 4 overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft.
This trade would mean that Brogdon will join his fourth different team for his 8th season in the NBA. Brogdon was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks, where he was the NBA Rookie of the Year in 2017, played three seasons with the Indiana Pacers, and was then traded to the Celtics. Now, Brogdon could be headed to Los Angeles, where he would join forces with Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, and Russell Westbrook on the Clippers.
