As fall camp concludes for the Washington State Cougars, Jake Dickert has named redshirt sophomore John Mateer as the team's starting quarterback. The Little Elm, Texas native shared his reaction to the news with the media this week.

"I just told him thank you, you know. Thank you for believing in me," Mateer said of his conversation with Dickert. "Putting a lot on my shoulders right now going forward and I think I'm ready for it. I know I'm ready for it, and we're just going to keep putting in work out here and we we will all be ready for it."

In that time, he has completed 15 passes on 19 attempts for 267 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. The Matteer also has shown his running ability, rushing for 151 yards and three touchdowns on 25 attempts. Washington State open the season against Portland State on Saturday, August 31.

"Now the job truly begins: we got to win some games," the signal caller noted.
