Following the weekend's first fall scrimmage for Washington State football, Cougars' head coach Jake Dickert stated that a starting quarterback would be named this coming Saturday, August 17th. Dickert gave clarification to that comment on Monday, stating that the decision would be made by the coaching staff that day, the players would be informed Sunday, and the official announcement would come that Monday, August 19th.

Dickert went on to elaborate on what factors are going into that decision as John Mateer and Zevi Eckhaus put forth their best efforts over the next few days.

"It isn't going to be about the stats, guys," Dickert said to the media scrum at Monday's practice. "It's going to be about the guy who gives us the best chance of winning. Sometimes, you can't rationalize that with stats. You can't rationalize that with exact things, or one moment, or this period. It is a feeling, it is a gut through a body of work over the last eight months. It's going to be hard. They're both competitors. But at the end of the day, when that thing comes, you got 24 hours and then you got to snap back and you got to play your role because you never know when your number's going to be called."
