McDonald chose the Cougars over offers from Boston College, Bowling Green, Texas State, Texas Tech, and UTEP, among others.

He was a two-way player in high school, but early indications are McDonald would play safety in college. McDonald also competes in various track and field events, including the 300-meter and 4x400 relay.
