Washington State Football: Kapena Gushiken Enjoying Camp Challenge From Receiver Room
After transferring from Saddleback College prior to the 2023 season, Washington State senior defensive back Kapena Gushiken made 36 tackles with five pass deflections and an interception return for a touchdown last year. Gushiken enters 2024 as one of the the leaders of the Cougars defense.
Now in his second fall camp in Pullman, Gushiken indicated the opportunity to practice against the likes of WSU receivers Kyle Williams and Tony Freeman is one he appreciates.

"It makes me better every day," Gushiken told media this week. They're never taking days off. Every time we go one-on-ones, anytime it's man coverage, they're bringing it every day. So they make us better every day."
The Maui native hopes to follow up on a season that was highlighted by his performance against UCLA, where he returned an interception 88 yards for a touchdown against the Bruins.
"It just helped me gain confidence and reminded myself that I belong at this level. I belong. I can play at this level."
Gushiken at the nickel will be a primary force in a Cougar secondary that hopes to show continued improvement again in 2024. The 2023 Cougars allowed 241.4 yards per game, an improvement from 272.3 the year prior.
Washington State will compete in an intrasquad scrimmage this Saturday as they continue fall camp. They open the regular season schedule on August 31 when they host Portland State.
