Update: Jake Dickert clarified his comments this week, stating that while the WSU coaching staff will decide on the starting quarterback on August 17, that decision will be announced to the public on Monday, August 19

The Washington State Cougars held their first fall scrimmage on Saturday, August 10 after two weeks of fall camp.

Head coach Jake Dickert addressed the media following the mock game. To no surprise, Dickert fielded questions about his two primary candidates for the starting quarterback job: John Mateer and Zevi Eckhaus. Both QBs saw ample time in the scrimmage with Eckhaus throwing three touchdowns and Mateer throwing two of his own.

"I saw Zevi after that pick go up and down the sideline, you know kind of rallying the guys around him, and I think that's very important. I think John played off-script very well today. We didn't run him just as a designed QB run. I want to see him throw and operate. So I thought a lot of positives [today]. I'm ready for that guy to take the reins. We will name a starter a week from today. "

Dickert's declaration comes not a moment too soon as the Cougars continue preparations for the 2024 season opener on August 31. The Cougs host Portand State at Martin Stadium with kickoff set for 12 PM PT on The CW.
