Minneapolis Combo Guard Signs With UW 4 Days After Committing

Husky basketball officially adds its first 2024 recruit on the first day of the early signing period.
In this story:

Four days after Casmir "Cash" Chavis announced his intention to play for coach Mike Hopkins and the University of Washington basketball team, the 4-star recruit put pen to paper and signed his national letter of intent to make it official.

The UW confirmed his addition through social media on Wednesday morning, the first day of the early signing period.

Chavis, a 6-foot-2 combo guard from Minneapolis, Minnesota, is expected to primarily play point guard once he arrives on campus while also providing depth at shooting guard. Currently, the versatile athlete plays wide receiver for the Park Center High School Pirates.

"Really excited about Cash," Hopkins said. "Love basketball players that play football. Tough, hard worker. Really talented. Has a great future."

With the move to the Big Ten Conference looming and other Midwest schools seemingly letting Chavis fall through the cracks as a recruit, it was a perfect opportunity for the Huskies to expand their reach.

"Now we're in the Big Ten, so recruiting becomes a little more broad," Hopkins added.

Of the 14 basketball recruits UW has offered in the 2024 class, only two remain uncommitted — 5-star combo guard Zoom Diallo and 5-star center Jayden Quaintance. Diallo, a former standout for Curtis High School in the Tacoma area and now at Prolific Prep in Napa, California, is the only tangible target remaining for the staff.

Chavis, with his 6-foot-2 frame paired with his athleticism as a multi-sport athlete, should provide an ideal heir apparent to Kentucky graduate transfer Sahvir Wheeler, bringing a strong ability to distribute the basketball as well as be physical on both sides of the floor.

Washington continues its regular-season campaign on Thursday night when the team hosts Northern Kentucky at 8 p.m.
