Wilson Says Good Bye to UW Hoops, Enters Transfer Portal
Three days after its season ended abruptly, the University of Washington basketball team began to change shape when reserve forward Langston Wilson revealed that he will enter the transfer portal.
On Saturday in a social media posting, the 6-foot-9 forward made his plans known for a program that could see a lot of revision in the month ahead, with the possible removal of coach Mike Hopkins following a 16-16 season.
Wilson leaves following two years in Montlake with his basketball career actually regressing over that time. He went from 28 game appearances a year ago to 18 this past season, averaging just 1.7 points and 1.9 rebounds per game. His high-water mark this winter was an 8-point, 5-rebound game against Idaho State.
A Pennsylvania native, Wilson brought tremendous leaping ability to Hopkins' program and could be an effective shot-blocker at times, but more often than not this unrefined big man played out of control and didn't stay on the floor long.
Diagnosed with a cardio issue that limited him as a high school player, Wilson spent a season at two-year Georgia Highlands College in Rome, Georgia, that got him noticed by the UW. 247Sports even rated him as the No. 2 junior-college player in the nation. He averaged 10.1 points and 7.6 rebounds an outing.
In his first season in Montlake, he started a pair of games over his 28 outings for a 17-15 Husky team and averaged 2.6 both in points and rebounds.
During that 2021-22 season, Wilson scored a career-best 11 points against UCLA and grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds against Wyoming.
In his final UW outing last Wednesday, he played six minutes and went scoreless in the Huskies' 74-68 loss to Colorado that eliminated them from the Pac-12 Tournament in Las Vegas.
Wilson was one of the more endearing personalities on the UW roster, likable like his coach, but same as Hopkins he just didn't get the job done to his or anyone else's satisfaction and will look elsewhere to continue his basketball.
