Fisch Adds Seventh and Last Arizona Coach to His Staff

Kevin Cummings will come to Montlake to oversee the receivers.

So far for every new assistant coach who joins the University of Washington football program, it seems as if three players disconnect.

The good news is Jedd Fisch is getting closer to finalizing his Husky coaching staff after adding Kevin Cummings as the new wide-receivers coach and a replacement for JaMarcus Shephard — the seventh of an expected 10 new hires.

Also, the Husky roster might not have a whole lot more to offer in terms of experienced talent for others to try and squire away from Montlake.

Cummings' hiring comes later than six others from Fisch's Arizona staff who have followed the coach to Montlake because Cummings made a run at becoming the Wildcats offensive coordinator for new coach Brent Brennan from San Jose State. Those two go way back.

Cummings played wide receiver at Oregon State in 2010-2013 when Brennan was his position coach, and Cummings then coached wide receivers at San Jose State in 2017-2020 for Brennan, when the latter became the Spartans' head coach.

Instead, Cummings will join the Huskies staff with the distinction of have having coached a pair of 90-catch receivers in Tetairoa McMillan and Jacob Cowing in the same season.

With seven coaches in place, Fisch is still seeking an edge-rusher coach, linebacker coach and a second defensive-backs coach, with one of them doubling as a defensive coordinator.

Cummings played for the Beavers in 2010-2013 on teams that featured Sean Mannion at quarterback and and NFL standout Brandin Cooks as a fellow wide receiver. In his career, Cummings started six times in the slot and caught 53 passes for 557 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Curiously in his four seasons in Corvallis, Cummings never once played against the Huskies, either out with injuries or simply going unused.
