Geirean Hatchett Exits UW With Football Future Unclear

The Husky offensive lineman passed up two seasons of eligibility in Montlake.

Geirean Hatchett got a chance to play college football with his home team, even lined up next to his younger brother on game day and appeared in the national championship game, and that was enough for him.

On Thursday, the one-time 4-star recruit — once pursued by every major college football program in the country — pulled the plug on his UW career in a social media post after four seasons. He didn't say whether he would play football again or not, but he was making a change just the same with two seasons of eligibility remaining.

The older of two Hatchett brothers opened four Husky games this past season and would have been a starting candidate once again for Jedd Fisch's coaching staff,

"I learned more than I could ever imagine and I am forever grateful," Geirean Hatchett wrote on social media. "I will receive my degree from UW and I will be moving on."

The older Hatchett came to the UW during the COVID-shortened season of 2020 after pulling 29 scholarship offers and picking the Huskies over the likes of Alabama, LSU, Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M and USC.

After he spent a season redshirting and another practicing but not playing, Kalen DeBoer's staff came in and put him to work in 2020.

Hatchett appeared in all 13 games in 2022, sometimes in creative ways, such as a blocking tight end. The Huskies were prepared to throw it to him if necessary.

He could play any position up front, but he started at offensive guard against California, Arizona, Oregon and Arizona State this past season before missing three games with an unspecified injury.

Hatchett was considered a proficient run blocker who sometimes struggled with his pass protection, but he was a player with plenty of potential. If he's headed elsewhere to play, he didn't say.

Younger brother Landen, an interior lineman recovering from knee surgery, remains in the transfer portal, determining his own future.

It will be interesting to see what Geirean Hatchett does next, whether it's in or out of football.
