Geirean Hatchett Is Mr. Right On UW Offensive Line
In his first three seasons, sophomore Geirean Hatchett has learned to play any one of the five positions along Washington’s offensive line.
Coming out of Ferndale, Washington, as a four-star recruit in 2020, Hatchett showed Husky offensive-line coach Scott Huff that he possessed both the mental and physical ability to play wherever he needed.
Huff told this player as much when the Ferndale High product enrolled early back in March 2020.
“When I got here, he just said, 'Be ready to play a lot of things. I see you as a guy who can be a swing guy and play a few different positions,' ” Hatchett recalled.
He began his UW career at center before proving rather quickly he was capable of much more.
However, because of a freshman season shortened by the Covid-19 pandemic and a rocky 2021 season in which the Huskies finished a dismal 4-8, Hatchett didn’t play in any games during his first two seasons.
Things changes after Kalen DeBoer’s staff arrived. Hatchett played in all 13 games last season for the UW, including eight at center, right guard and even tight end, along with showing he could make an impact on special teams, as well.
Through the first week of fall camp, Hatchett found a home on the right side of the Husky offensive line. He’s practiced primarily with the second-team offense behind fifth-year junior right guard Nate Kalepo.
Hatchet also has received a decent amount of reps in camp at right tackle behind junior starter Roger Rosengarten.
“Right now, I’ve mostly been playing the right side,” Hatchett said, when asked where he feels most comfortable. “Coach Huff really wanted me to focus on the right side so I don’t have too many things on my plate. Honestly, I just feel like I’ll fit in wherever coach needs me.
"I think I’ve been playing pretty well. Me and the other interior guys and tackles have been having a really good competition this camp and I’ll fit in wherever coach needs me.”
