How Will Washington Allocate Additional Scholarships?
The window to enter the transfer portal has officially closed, and while it might take another day or two for the names of Huskies who have entered the portal to pop up (if there are any more), one thing is certain: Washington is currently under the roster limit of 85 scholarship players on the roster.
Barring any further departures from the roster, head coach Kalen DeBoer's squad has two scholarships to give out. Now the question begs, what are they going to do with them?
The obvious answer would be to hit the transfer portal, as it appears the Huskies are actively looking to bring another piece into the secondary. The top option seems to be former Rhode Island safety Antonio Carter, who has received over 20 Power 5 offers since electing to transfer.
There have also been whispers of the Huskies adding another wide receiver following the departure of Taj Davis. Some have theorized that a name to watch would be former Purdue receiver Milton Wright, a four-star recruit out of high school who originally was recruited by wide receivers coach JaMarcus Shephard.
However, there are probably bigger needs than another receiver, namely another edge rusher. The departure of former five-star recruit Sav'ell Smalls leaves Washington a little thin at the position and getting an experienced body that can set the edge against the run should be the primary focus of this transfer window.
Depending on numbers, there could also be a scholarship or two given out to players already in the building. Two of the top options in-house should be linebacker Drew Fowler, who chose to walk on at Washington over scholarship offers from Louisville and UCLA, and edge rusher Milton Hopkins.
Hopkins spent the majority of spring practices running with the second team on the edge. He probably won't hold the position in the fall especially now that Maurice Heims is fully healthy, but Hopkins' athleticism could be utilized very well on special teams, and he could be used as a gunner, similar to how Edefuan Ulofoshio started his career.
