Huskies Add San Diego State QB Haskell from the Transfer Portal

The newcomer from the Aztecs has three seasons of eligibility remaining.

San Diego State didn't join the Pac-12 Conference this month as everyone envisioned, but one of its quarterbacks did. He's coming to Seattle., too.

On Saturday, Will Haskell announced he will transfer to the University of Washington. While no one is going to dislodge Heisman Trophy candidate and sixth-year senior Michael Penix Jr., this couldn't be encouraging news for Dylan Morris, a junior who's been patiently waiting to reclaim the starting job he once held, or Austin Mack, an incoming freshman hoping to contend for the No. 1 role, making the 2024 quarterback battle all that more competitive.

The 6-foot-4, 200-pound Haskell turns to Montlake after redshirting for the Aztecs in 2020 and playing sparingly over the past two years. He has three seasons of eligibility remaining.

A dual-threat quarterback, Haskell played for Ironwood High school in Glendale, Arizona, where he was named the 5A Arizona Player of the Year in 2019. In his career, he completed 285 of 461 passes for 4,193 yards and 44 touchdowns, and rushed 206 times for 1,902 yards and 26 scores.

He chose San Diego State over Fresno State, Iowa State, Duke and Washington State. His father, also Will Haskell, lettered as a Cougars running back in 1993.

At San Diego State, the younger Haskell had his career bog down some this past season. Playing behind Virginia Tech transfer Braxton Burmeister, he appeared in early losses to Arizona and Utah before getting impatient and leaving Brady Hoke's program during the season. The last straw for him appeared to be getting pulled in a reserve appearance in favor of true freshman Kyle Crum.

In 2021, DeBoer and his staff got an up-close look at the young quarterback. Haskell provided a 7-yard TD run against Fresno State, closing out the scoring in a 30-20 defeat.

It seems only fair DeBoer would take a player away from the Aztecs after losing a pair of UW starters to them in tight end Mark Redman and edge rusher Cooper McDonald once he was hired.
