Huskies Break Out New-Model Uniforms With Some Fashion Tweaks

Stripes appear to be the biggest alteration heading into the 2023 season.

Stripes.

Jimmy Rodgers, the 1984 Orange Bowl captain, will be overjoyed to know the University of Washington football team once again will wear uniform pants with stripes running from hip to kneecap.

To him, it always been a subtle reminder of Husky greatness, of beating teams such as Michigan and Oklahoma on a very big national stage, of Don James dressing the team for success and taking the program to great heights.

This week, UW players modeled their new threads for the coming season, as sewn together by Adidas, with small tweaks here and there.

By all accounts, the Huskies are happy with what they've seen and pulled on so far.

"Shout out to Adidas, man," senior tight end Devin Culp said while modeling his new team wear. "Got these new comfortable, breathable uniforms."

Over the past few decades, the Huskies have stayed true to the traditional purple and gold color combo for the most part, though adding all-purple and all-white alternatives for certain occasions.

Unofficially, it seems UW teams have fared well when dressed in all purple, both at home and on the road — last year's Michigan State and Oregon games come to mind — and not so well in the all-white ensemble in recent years, though the Huskies did beat California and Washington State last season by relying on that color-neutral wardrobe.

The argument by some fans against going all-white is it makes the Huskies look weak without one of its dominant colors on the field. Tradition matters to a lot of them, too.

The UW, of course, tried to go throwback against UCLA in 2021, on the 30th anniversary of James' 1991 co-national championship team by wearing replica uniforms, and came up a 24-17 loser to the Bruins.

The lesson here is the clothes don't always make the man.
