As fans trickled into Husky Stadium Sunday morning, quarterback Michael Penix Jr. gave the crowd a reason to cheer.

Washington’s starter completed five of eight pass attempts during a live series capped off with a 10-yard touchdown throw to junior wide receiver Rome Odunze. The day before, the UW held its first fall scrimmage with Penix back under center, according to head coach Kalen DeBoer

On the Sunday opening drive, senior tight end Devin Culp made a crucial 20-yard sideline reception that set up the scoring play. Fellow senior tight end Jack Westover and junior receiver Jalen McMillan also caught a pass a piece.

Towards the latter portion of practice, the UW ran two more offensive series' with Penix and junior backup Dylan Morris getting one drive each. Neither resulted in a score.

Freshman quarterback Austin Mack showed off his deep arm talent on his second scrimmage series near the end of practice. Mack threw a shot to walk-on sophomore receiver Owen Coutts that was disrupted by a pass interference penalty.

Another freshman, edge rusher Jacob Lane, recorded a pair of sacks against Mack and junior quarterback Alex Johnson. Walk-on sophomore edge rusher Jake Jennings also recorded a sack against Mack.
