This Saturday, the Washington Husky defense faces a unique and difficult challenge. The University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors come to town riding high on the success of their “Run & Shoot” offense.

The Run & Shoot offense is the explosive offensive style made popular in the late 80’s and early 90’s by the Houston Cougars and their dynamic QB Andre Ware, who won a Heisman Trophy in 1989 running that system. It utilizes 4 or 5 receivers spread across the formation, with lots of movement and shifting before the snap of the ball. The concept is meant not only to confuse defenses, but to determine what type of coverage they will see before the snap of the ball.

This type of offensive scheme can be a headache for defensive coordinators, and the Husky’s Jimmy Lake is no exception. Watch the video below to hear coach Lake’s assessment of the Rainbow Warrior offense.
