Malloe Could be Job-Hunting In Wake of Kelly Leaving UCLA
The fallout from Chip Kelly leaving as UCLA football coach will have wide-ranging ramifications throughout the program. Just as they did at Washington, players will be looking to abandon the Bruins for a more stable situation.
With the mid-February coaching change, Kelly's successor will have almost zero time to strengthen his program, rather he'll be relegated to mostly doing damage control.
Did anyone mention the Bruins are joining the Big Ten for this coming season?
Also, consider that Ikaika Malloe, the former Husky safety and linebacker and loyal UW assistant coach, could be facing a most cruel twist of coaching fate.
On Jan. 4, Kelly promoted him to UCLA defensive coordinator. In the worst-case scenario, Malloe will hold that coaching position for only a month and then have to go job-hunting at a late date.
Malloe coached for UCLA and Kelly the past two seasons, coming to Westwood after getting let go at Washington as fallout when Jimmy Lake was fired.
Here's an idea: new Husky coach Jedd Fisch is still looking to hire a linebackers coach and Malloe could be available, with the potential of bringing Bruins players with him.
After all, Malloe previously headed to UCLA with former UW edge rusher Laiatu Latu in tow. He found a new home for Latu, who had been medically retired by the Huskies and but was cleared by the Bruins and became a consensus All-America selection.
Originally a walk-on player from Waimanalo, Hawaii, Malloe worked his way into playing time and a scholarship as a safety and outside linebacker for the Huskies in 1993-96, leading the team in interceptions with 5 in 1995.
He worked as a UW grad assistant for three seasons before accepting full-time jobs at Western Illinois, UTEP, Hawaii, Yale, Portland State and Utah State.
Malloe coached for six seasons as a coach for the Huskies, four for Chris Petersen and two for Lake, serving as an edge-rushers and defensive-line coach, and sharing in co-defensive coordinator duties.
He certainly knows his way around Husky Stadium.
