The name, image and likeness deals continue to roll in for Michael Penix Jr. After signing with local apparel company Simply Seattle in 2022, both sides have agreed to renew the partnership for the currrent season.

The deal extends beyond just Penix. In a news release, Simply Seattle revealed the company has obtained a licensing agreement with the University of Washington that allows any athlete signed to an NIL deal with Simply Seattle to use the university's name and logo on their official merchandise.

On top of being able to use the university's licensing on official merchandise, Simply Seattle also will pay its athletes, including Penix, "one of the highest royalty rates in the industry." Any Washington athlete contracted with the apparel company will receive a 50 percent return on every item of merchandise sold and 100 percent on specific items.

"We want to make sure all of our NIL athletes earn their true value and believe this groundbreaking commitment demonstrates that," the news release said.

Simply Seattle also partnered with the Husky softball team during the 2022-23 season and, now that Penix has announced his new apparel deal, other athletes at the university could follow suit.

With football season on the horizon and what could be a banner year for Penix, he could find himself as a trailblazer in the NIL space. Washington's quarterback can be an example for NIL facilitator Montlake Futures to show prospective recruits and transfer-portal targets in all sports of what success in Seattle can bring.

I've followed the Huskies for my entire life, and to be in a position where I get to cover them full-time is nothing short of an honor. After graduating from Lasell University in 2019, I moved to Seattle to pursue my dream of working in sports media. While writing for the Husky Haul, I also covered local sports for the Everett Daily Herald before the COVID-19 pandemic. After being hired by Realdawg.com in February of 2021, I also transitioned into doing a lot of entertainment writing, as I work on a variety of magazines as a contributing writer for Centennial Media, and have also contributed to Emmy Magazine, as well as Walt Disney Television Studios.
