Should Washington Add Another Quarterback?
December was an interesting month for Washington at the quarterback position. It started off on the highest note possible, with Michael Penix announcing he'd be returning for the 2023 season.
Then on December 14th, four-star quarterback Lincoln Kienholz, who had been committed to Washington for about six months, flipped to Ohio State. That leaves the Huskies in a bit of an odd spot at the most important position on the field.
While the starter for 2023 is obvious, looking beyond next season is incredibly foggy. The two backups on the roster, Sam Huard and Dylan Morris, both had their moments during fall camp, but it doesn't feel like either has the coaching staff's confidence as the quarterback of the future just yet.
While the Huskies already have a quarterback committed in the class of 2024 in three-star local product EJ Caminong, that shouldn't stop them from pursuing other options, either as a starter or as insurance. The only question is, will they do that this offseason, or wait until next year?
The system that head coach Kalen DeBoer and offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb run is pretty hard to learn, so getting another quarterback in the room this year to learn the system isn't the worst thing in the world. Also, Washington only has three scholarship quarterbacks on the roster, which can make the situation at the position very shaky if a few injuries occur.
With that being said, there are a few decent quarterback targets remaining in the portal, the biggest name available being former four-star recruit in the class of 2022 Brady Allen. Allen, who originally committed to Purdue, is a big, prototypical pocket passer who would fit the Husky system really well.
However, it's not a guarantee that the coaching staff even decides to take a quarterback over the next few months, and that would also say a lot about they feel about the progress Morris and Huard have made over the course of the season.
