Takeaways from Washington's 11th Fall Practice
Washington's offense has been hot throughout fall camp and it had arguably its best day on Tuesday. With big plays galore, both the first and second teams found the end zone from over 50 yards away.
The offensive barrage started early in practice, with Michael Penix finding Rome Odunze for an 18-yard gain and then hitting Ja'Lynn Polk for a 53-yard touchdown with safety Dominique Hampton in coverage. On the next drive, Dylan Morris found Denzel Boston for a 57-yard touchdown, after Boston got past freshman Leroy Bryant.
Michigan State transfer Germie Bernard was virtually unguardable on the day, pulling in two touchdowns from Morris. The receiver found the end zone from 47 yards out, and again in the red zone. He also pulled in a 50-yard reception and continues to push for playing time while running with the second team.
Speaking of pushing for playing time, true freshman receiver Taeshaun Lyons got a fair amount of run with the second team on Tuesday in place of Giles Jackson. The former four-star recruit struggled with drops through the first few practices but looks like he's starting to find his way.
Inside the Notebook
- Lyons and Williams weren't the only true freshman to see action with the second team on Tuesday. Cornerback Leroy Bryant, safety Vincent Holmes, and offensive lineman Landen Hatchett also took snaps with the backups.
- Running back Dillon Johnson, edge rushers Sekai Asoau-Afoa and Zach Durfee, offensive lineman Parker Brailsford and safety Vince Nunley all got action with the starters on Tuesday. Brailsford has acted as the second-team center but played one drive at right guard late in practice.
- While the offense won the day, the defensive line continued to create pressure. Bralen Trice recorded one sack and combined for another with Tuli Letuligasenoa. Linebacker Ralen Goforth also came flying in up the middle on a blitz to record a sack.
- Ulumoo Ale probably would have been credited with a sack in a live game setting, but pulled up to avoid contact and let Michael Penix run by him. The play resulted in a rushing touchdown for Penix, one of two he recorded in the red zone portion of practice.
- Penix displayed his elusiveness at multiple points on Tuesday, evading two sacks on one play before finding Jack Westover for a big gain.
