UW's Penix Receives Walter Camp Player of the Week Award

The Washington quarterback earns national honor for Michigan State performance.
In this story:

Michael Penix Jr. threw for a season-high 473 passing yards and 4 touchdowns while completing 77 percent of his throws against Michigan State on the road, putting him on the receiving end of the Walter Camp Offensive Player of the Week award on Sunday.

Penix became the third quarterback to receive the award this season, joining Texas' Quinn Ewers and Colorado's Shedeur Sanders.

As the eighth-ranked Huskies walked out of Spartan Stadium with a 41-7 victory, Penix Jr. continued to make a case for himself as a serious candidate for the Heisman Trophy.

Through the first three games of the season, he is the nation's leader in passing yards (1,332) and passing yards per game (444) and is second in passing touchdowns with 12, sitting just behind Notre Dame's Sam Hartman, who has 13.

If Penix Jr. finds himself in contention for the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award at the end of the year, he has a good chance  of becoming a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. Since 2013, the recipient of the Camp Award has also taken home the Heisman all but twice.

With the receiving corps that surrounds him, Penix probably will be in contention for this honor every week. For the second time in school history and this season, the Huskies had two receivers finish with more than 100 receiving yards in a game.

Washington's offense also gained over 400 total yards in the first half alone and finished with 713 yards, the second-highest mark in school history. Every week, offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb has dialed up deep throws galore, which has helped Penix Jr. showcase his skills and he's made the most of the opportunity.

I've followed the Huskies for my entire life, and to be in a position where I get to cover them full-time is nothing short of an honor. After graduating from Lasell University in 2019, I moved to Seattle to pursue my dream of working in sports media. While writing for the Husky Haul, I also covered local sports for the Everett Daily Herald before the COVID-19 pandemic. After being hired by Realdawg.com in February of 2021, I also transitioned into doing a lot of entertainment writing, as I work on a variety of magazines as a contributing writer for Centennial Media, and have also contributed to Emmy Magazine, as well as Walt Disney Television Studios.
