3-Star QB Dermaricus Davis Joins Washington's Class of 2024

The Huskies get a commitment from a talented signal-caller.

After three-star quarterback EJ Caminong's decommitment, it appears Washington already had a plan in mind at quarterback. The Huskies already had set up an official visit with three-star signal-caller Dermaricus Davis from Etiwanda High School in Rancho Cucamonga, California, and they secured his services during the visit.

Davis becomes the fifth recruit of the day to commit to Washington, as well as the ninth person to join the class of 2024. The coaching staff has created all kinds of momentum on the recruiting trail and Davis has become the exclamation point after a top-tier weekend of recruiting.

It felt like the Huskies were originally planning on taking two quarterbacks in the class of 2024, but after Sam Huard decided to enter the transfer portal, the timeline changed. Washington ended up securing a commitment from four-star quarterback Austin Mack, who reclassified to join the class of 2023.

Then came Caminong's de-commitment and all focus shifted to Davis. While the newest Husky doesn't have a ranking from the 247 Sports Composite just yet, there's a lot to like about his film and the tandem of Kalen DeBoer and Ryan Grubb has earned the benefit of the doubt when it comes to quarterback evaluation.

Davis has a big arm and also knows when to tuck it and run. He possesses great field vision and while he needs to add a lot of weight to his frame, he can be relied upon to get out of the pocket and make a play with his arm or his legs.

The coaching staff clearly has a plan at the quarterback position. With Michael Penix set to depart for the NFL Draft following the 2023 season, it's time to start looking toward the future.

It appears the 2024 season will most likely be a battle between Dylan Morris and Austin Mack for the starting job with the potential to add another signal-caller through the portal as well, giving Davis time to sit and learn the system. Whenever he hears his name called, DeBoer and Co. look like they'll have him prepared to play.

I've followed the Huskies for my entire life, and to be in a position where I get to cover them full-time is nothing short of an honor. After graduating from Lasell University in 2019, I moved to Seattle to pursue my dream of working in sports media. While writing for the Husky Haul, I also covered local sports for the Everett Daily Herald before the COVID-19 pandemic. After being hired by Realdawg.com in February of 2021, I also transitioned into doing a lot of entertainment writing, as I work on a variety of magazines as a contributing writer for Centennial Media, and have also contributed to Emmy Magazine, as well as Walt Disney Television Studios.
