Deshawn Warner Recaps Washington Official Visit

The 3-star edge rusher has his college commitment date looming.

On his first trip to Seattle, the Washington football program was  able to leave a big impression on three-star edge rusher Deshawn Warner. The product of Desert Edge High School in Goodyear, Arizona, is finishing up a month full of official visits before making a decision on where he'll play at the next level on July 1.

Currently ranked as the 670th overall player in the country, Warner is rising fast and will be deciding between Kansas, Texas, Oregon State, and Washington. During his time in Seattle, edge-rushers coach Eric Schmidt and the coaching staff made Warner and his entire family feel like just that —family.

"They didn't just treat me right, but they treated my whole family like their own," Warner said. " Coach Schmidt brought his son to play football with my little brother and it helped show me where I stand with them outside of football. That's one thing I really want to know, that I'm a priority off the field, too."

Warner said the three main things he's looking for in a school are how he fits in the defensive scheme, does the school feel like home and how his whole family is treated by the coaching staff. Washington passed all three of those tests with flying colors.

"I see myself fitting into the defense really well," he said of his first priority. "The defensive ends are really involved and I can definitely see myself being successful in the scheme."

Warner also got a chance to meet with Kalen DeBoer, who helped him check off his second box. "He's such a nice, genuine guy," he said. "He's someone I can see myself playing for and someone that knows how to put the right things into a program on and off the field."

As for the third priority, Warner was deeply impressed by the family feel at Washington. "From the way they talked to me, to the fact that their wives and children were with them all the time, that was something that stood out to me," he said. "They treat everyone like one of their own and that's really important to me."

The Huskies are looking to secure commitments from a lot of recruits over the next few weeks and Warner has become a high priority for them in what could be a densely populated defensive line class.

I've followed the Huskies for my entire life, and to be in a position where I get to cover them full-time is nothing short of an honor. After graduating from Lasell University in 2019, I moved to Seattle to pursue my dream of working in sports media. While writing for the Husky Haul, I also covered local sports for the Everett Daily Herald before the COVID-19 pandemic. After being hired by Realdawg.com in February of 2021, I also transitioned into doing a lot of entertainment writing, as I work on a variety of magazines as a contributing writer for Centennial Media, and have also contributed to Emmy Magazine, as well as Walt Disney Television Studios.
