Top QB Austin Mack Commits to Washington

The Huskies got a potential star in the Folsom quarterback.

Kalen DeBoer has been looking to rebuild the depth in the quarterback room, and so far in the 2024 class, he's done a credible job. Even though Washington already has a commitment in the class from local three-star EJ Caminong, the staff knew it needed more depth at the position following former five-star Sam Huard entering his name in the transfer portal.

The Huskies responded by earning a commitment from four-star quarterback Austin Mack. Mack, a product of Folsom High School in California, is an incredibly exciting prospect, who's currently rated as the 52nd overall player in the country by 247 Sports.

Standing at 6-foot-6 and weighing in at 210 pounds, Mack is a very different prospect than another Husky quarterback from Folsom, Jake Browning. With a rocket for an arm, Mack has all the tools needed to be a successful quarterback at the college, and eventually NFL level.

Mack is also a gifted processor, who displays the ability to quickly get through his progressions and make an accurate throw to his receivers downfield. At his size, he also shows no fear when it comes to standing tall in the pocket and taking a hit as he delivers the ball.

The Huskies are going to be looking for answers at quarterback in 2024, when Michael Penix Jr. will be off to the NFL. As of right now, the depth chart has Dylan Morris along with two true freshmen on the roster, and, unless something changes, Mack is going to have a chance to win the job in his first year on campus.

This is shaping up to be a promising class for Washington. While there's still a long way to go, it's off to a great start between three-star receiver Landon Bell and now two excellent quarterback prospects in Mack and Caminong.

The Huskies also have done a good job of putting themselves in the mix for a lot of the West Coast's elite prospects, and now it's time to lock them up.

Update: On February 14th, 2023, Mack announced that he will be reclassifying and will be enrolling at Washington for the fall quarter.

"It really just gives me a chance to grow and get acclimated to the situation as well as it gives me a chance to compete for the top spot next year," he said in an interview with 247 Sports' Brandon Huffman.

This solves the team's dilemma of needing a third quarterback on scholarship after Huard's transfer to Cal Poly. Instead of potentially starting a true freshman in 2024, the Huskies are now much better off when they're forced to eventually find a new option after Penix's departure for the NFL.
