West Virginia Overwhelms Wildcats and Takes Series

The Mountaineers put up 10 runs for a series clinching win over Kansas State in the series finale

Manhattan, KS – The 24th-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers grabbed game three and the series from the Kansas State Wildcats with a 10-6 decision Sunday afternoon. The Mountaineers’ win marked the first Big 12 Conference member to win a conference road series.

West Virginia grabbed the lead in the top of the second when Kevin Dowdell put the first run on the board with an RBI sacrifice fly followed by a Grant Hussey two-run homerun for the early 3-0 advantage. Hussey led the Mountaineers at the plate, going 3-4 with a double, home run and a pair of RBIs.

Kansas State claimed the lead in the bottom half of the inning after Cash Rugely hit a two-RBI single and Roberto Pena hit a two-run homerun to cap a four-run second inning.

Braden Barry recorded a team-high three RBIs, highlighted by a two-run homerun to reclaim the West Virginia lead 5-4 in the third.

J.J Wetherholt added a run with an RBI sac fly in the fourth and Caleb McNeely went opposite field for a solo home run in the fifth, extending the lead to three 7-4.

Consecutive singles in the ninth from Tevin Tucker and J.J. Wetherholt placed runners at the corners and paved the way for a Braden Barry sacrifice bunt. Then, with two outs and the bases loaded, Landon Wallace dropped a single in the shallow gap of left-centerfield, scoring two as the Mountaineers scored three insurance runs in the ninth to take a 10-4 lead.

West Virginia is back in action Wednesday night to take on the Marshall Thundering Herd at Appalachian Power Park with the first pitch set for 6:30.
