West Virginia Rises in the National Rankings

The Mountaineers are firmly in the top 20 in every major college baseball poll and are on the cusp of making program history with a potential top 10 appearance

The West Virginia Mountaineers are one of the hottest teams in baseball, having won eight consecutive games, including wins over rivals, Pitt and Penn State and Big 12 Conference series sweeps over TCU and at Baylor and have climbed to 16th in the RPI and are firmly in the top 20 in every major college baseball ranking.

The Mountaineers made an appearance in the national rankings the first week of April before dropping a home series to Kansas and were promptly removed but remerged in the national spotlight last week after a four-game winning streak.

There’s not much history with West Virginia baseball in the national rankings, and previous marks are based on the USA Today Coaches Poll. The Mountaineers coming in at 14th this week is the highest ranking the Mountaineers have received, eclipsing the mark set in 2019 when the Mountaineers hosted an NCAA Regional for the first time in over 50 years. Additionally, WVU has never entered the top 10 in any national poll, and with the potential for another 4-0 week, the Mountaineers may hit another to hit the program milestone.

West Virginia also maintained the top spot in the Big 12 standings following the sweep over Baylor this past weekend.

Big 12 Conference Standings

1. West Virginia 11-4 (.733)

2. Oklahoma State 11-7 (.611)

3. Kansas State 11-7 (.611)

4. Texas 11-7 (.611)

5. Texas Tech 9-9 (.500)

6. Oklahoma 9-9 (.500)

7. TCU 7-10 (.412)

8. Kansas 6-12 (.333)

9. Baylor 6-15 (.286)

West Virginia will host Oklahoma in a three-game weekend conference series. Game one is scheduled for Friday night at 6:30 p.m. EST,
