Four Potential WVU Head Coach Candidates Make NCAA Tournament

Just a few teams Mountaineer fans will want to follow throughout the month.

West Virginia athletic director Wren Baker will have a busy month of watching and talking a lot of basketball as he prepares to hire the next men's coach.

The timing of when a hire will take place is a tricky situation because there are some candidates in the NCAA Tournament and he'll have to wait for their run to be over before he can really dive deep into conversations about the opening at WVU.

Baker's actual list that is kept locked in his desk drawer is probably very long, but there seems to be a good idea as to who some of those top candidates may be. Below you will find who some of those candidates will take on in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and where they'll be playing.

The school underlined is the team the potential candidate coaches.

Darian DeVries: 10. Drake vs. 7. Washington State (Thursday in Omaha; East Region)

Mark Byington: 12. James Madison vs. 5. Wisconsin (Friday in Brooklyn; South Region)

Niko Medved: 10. Colorado State vs. 10. Virginia (First Four on Thursday in Charlotte; Midwest Region)

Pat Kelsey: 13. Charleston vs. 4. Alabama (Friday in Spokane; West Region)

Josh Schertz's Indiana State squad just missed out on the tournament, being one of the first four out of the field.

So although West Virginia isn't participating in the big dance this season, there is still some rooting interest for Mountaineer fans by watching their potential future head coach make a run in the tournament.
