REPORT: The Big 12 is Exploring Options for Conference Matchups in Mexico

Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark has his sights set on Mexico City

According to an initial report from Joseph Duarte of the Houston Chronicle, the Big 12 Conference is looking to play games internationally, starting with the possible basketball matchup featuring Houston and Kansas in Mexico City this upcoming season.

Duarte states Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark recently visited Mexico on a fact-finding trip, meeting with various officials and touring potential sites, also citing, it's the commissioner's vision to nationalize and, in this case, globalize the league’s brand

The Big 12 is also showing interest in playing football in Mexico City for the 2024-25 seasons. 

Houston will be the closest Big 12 member to the southern border is set to join the conference on July 1 along with Cincinnati, BYU, and UCF. while Texas and Oklahoma are scheduled to leave the conference July 2024. 

Naturally, Baylor, Texas Tech and TCU would also be viable options for matchup in Mexico, and rumors continue to circulate the Big 12 Conference is looking to expand with Pac 12 members Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah might be appealing. 

The West Virginia basketball program went overseas during the summer of 2019 to compete in Spain, which is allowed every four years by the NCAA, and traveled to Germany to play in the Armed Forces Classic against Texas A&M in early November of 2017.
