The Bob Huggins Situation is 'Under Review'

May is a rather quiet time of year in the world of collegiate athletics. Yeah, you have baseball going on and a little bit of recruiting but other than that, it's a slow time of the year for those in the media industry.
That was until head WVU men's basketball coach Bob Huggins had a major blunder Monday morning while having an on-air conversation with Cincinnati radio host, Bill Cunningham of WLW.
The two immediately began talking about his disdain for Xavier University - his former crosstown rival when he was the head man at Cincinnati. The conversation went off the rails pretty quickly when Huggins used a homophobic slur when referring to Xavier fans.
Shortly after the audio was released on social media both Huggins and the university released a statement.
In the statement released by the university, there were a few key words that stood out to me, which I placed in bold.
"West Virginia University does not condone the use of such language and takes such actions very seriously. The situation is under review and will be addressed by the University and its athletics department."
Now the obvious question is, does Huggins keep his job?
It's a difficult decision to make if you're Wren Baker. If it was some young coach that hadn't spent a lot of time at WVU, he probably would have already been fired. But this is Bob Huggins. A Hall of Famer. A guy who has done so much for the university and the state. Although what he said was completely unacceptable and just flat-out wrong, the majority of the fanbase seems unbothered by the situation and forgiving.
Does this mean he will keep his job? Who knows? In my opinion, anything is on the table. If he isn't fired, I would expect a suspension of some sort and perhaps even a fine. What that suspension would look like is anyone's guess.
But if he is fired, it could be the start of an influx of players hitting the transfer portal which is not ideal. Especially after the Mountaineers set themselves up for a strong season with the additions they've made from the portal. And then Baker must decide whether to promote from within or go through an extensive coaching search extremely late in the process.
Wren Baker, President E. Gordon Gee, Bob Huggins, and other administrators need to sit down and have a long conversation today about what the right course of action looks like and take it. This can't be something that drags out for weeks or months. Resolve the matter and either move forward with Huggins or part ways and begin the search for the next head coach.
