West Virginia freshman guard Trey Doomes has entered the transfer portal as of Monday afternoon.

The news doesn’t come as a huge shock as it appeared that as the season neared its end Doomes played in very few games after Coach Huggins pulled Doomes’ redshirt on January 12th to play against Oklahoma State.

At the time Doomes’ redshirt was pulled because Huggins said the team needed a guard that could penetrate the lane, and Doomes was the only guard he trusted to straight-line drive.

However, Doomes’ performance on the court was what most would consider fairly mediocre and although he scored in more than half the games he played in, he only had double-digit points once.

Doomes’ only played in ten games the entire season and combined he was only on the court for 46 minutes in his career as a Mountaineer.

Doomes is the second WVU guard to enter the transfer portal this season after Beetle Bolden entered a few weeks ago.

There may be some rational behind Doomes’ decision. Huggins pulled his redshirt for him to end up hardly playing throughout the season and even as the Mountaineers struggled Doomes never played more than ten minutes a game.

Huggins once regarded Doomes as the best athlete on the team but it appeared that he had little faith in his ability to produce positive results.

His decision comes just two days before West Virginia’s first game in the CBI tournament where they will take on Grand Canyon University in Morgantown for their first round matchup.
