Two Former WVU Players Chime In on Huggins' Comments
WVU men's head basketball coach Bob Huggins caught everyone's attention on Monday when he slipped a homophobic slur when speaking about fans of Xavier University during a radio appearance on Bill Cunningham’s show in Cincinnati.
Huggins has since apologized and the university is now reviewing the matter.
His history with Xavier goes way back to the early 90s when he became the head coach of the University of Cincinnati. The Crosstown Shootout is one of college basketball's most fierce/nastiest rivalries and Huggins has never shied away from revealing his feelings about the Musketeers program.
This past season, West Virginia made the trek to Cintas Center in Cincinnati to face Xavier in the Big East-Big 12 Battle. Although it had been several years since Xavier fans saw Huggins in their arena, they were just as rowdy. Emmitt Matthews Jr. and Erik Stevenson, who were on the team this past season, can attest to that. A few hours after the audio clip made its way around the internet, the two former Mountaineers dropped their thoughts.
Again, this doesn't make what Huggins said okay, but you do have to wonder about what things Xavier fans were belting out that night.
