Two New Candidates Enter the Mix for WVU Job
West Virginia athletic director Wren Baker could have just slapped an interim tag on Ron Everhart or Josh Eilert shortly after Bob Huggins resigned as head coach but has instead opted to conduct a national search before promoting a current assistant.
UAB's Andy Kennedy and Youngstown State's Jerrod Calhoun have been linked to the job basically since it became open as both were former assistants under Huggins. But there are a couple of new names that have entered the chat.
According to Adam Zagoria of the New York Times, West Virginia is talking to Ritchie McKay and Ron Hunter.
McKay, 58, is currently the head coach at Liberty. He has led the Flames to a 226-113 record over ten seasons and has won five consecutive regular season conference championships, also claiming three conference tournament championships during that span. Prior to Liberty, McKay served as the head coach at Portland State, Colorado State, Oregon State, and New Mexico. He owns a career record of 367-242 (.603).
Hunter, 59, just wrapped up his fourth season as the head coach at Tulane, where he has compiled a 56-57 record. Prior to taking the job at Tulane in 2019, Hunter turned the Georgia State program completely around, guiding them to 171-95 record over eight seasons which saw three regular season conference championships, three conference tournament championships, and three NCAA Tournament appearances.
