Tynice Martin, Mountaineers Enjoying Strong 2019
If you're feeling the sting of a wasted season for the West Virginia men's basketball team, you're not alone.
Fortunately, there's another basketball team in Morgantown that deserves your attention.
The West Virginia women's basketball team is currently riding a four game winning streak, which includes the programs first win at Texas. Leading the way is reigning WVU Student-Athlete of the Week redshirt junior Tynice Martin. Martin is averaging 17.9 points per game, including a season-high 27 in the win at Austin. The 27 point effort also included a program record 16 first-quarter points. The Atlanta native has been a spark this season in her return from an injury that sidelined her all of last season.
The women's team sits at 16-5 overall on the season and 7-3 in conference, which has them tied for third in the Big 12 with Iowa State. That tie will change on Saturday as the women travel to Ames to take on the Cyclones. The thing most fans haven't noticed with this team is the fact they are playing this well while only playing eight players. Only three players have played in all 21 games so far due to injury. The teams third (Kysre Gondrezick 13.2 ppg) and fourth (Katrina Pardee 13 ppg) leading scorers have missed a combined 23 games due to injury. Naomi Davenport's 14 points per game is second on the team and the senior has been a true leader on the floor for this team with her scoring, rebounding and desire to win.
Mountaineer Nation, you still have three chances to watch the team play at the Coliseum. On February 16th, TCU comes to town and admission to the game is FREE. February 23rd, Oklahoma will visit with tickets as low as $3 depending on the size of your party. Finally, on March 4th, the No. 1 Baylor Lady Bears pays a visit to Morgantown.
Let's pack the Coliseum and support head coach Mike Carey and the Mountaineers.
