What Bill Self Said About the Loss to WVU

Kansas head coach Bill Self discusses what went wrong in Morgantown.

On West Virginia’s shooting in the first half

"I thought that they were great, I thought that everyone on their team played exceptionally well, especially in the first half offensively. We couldn’t guard them, and we didn’t come prepared, I don't think, to defend against guys who are really good shooters and can go get their own, such as (fifth year guard Raequan) Battle. So, I thought they were terrific."

On defensive adjustments in the second half

"Well, our ball screen defense was atrocious so that was a big part. Tried to be more aggressive in the second half, and then, we messed up on the tag a couple times, so we didn’t do a good job at all on the ball screen defense. You know, you say make adjustments, so the guy shakes you down and goes one on one and makes a hard shot. I mean you make an adjustment to that, I don’t think those are adjustment type plays. But, how we caught a ball screen, certainly we could have done a better job with that, without a question."

On the lack of threes in the second half

"West Virginia did a good job. The same guys that shot it so well the first half, we didn’t make them the second half, and those are shots you want to shoot. So, you know, you get a good look, you should make one out of three of those, at least, and we didn’t do that the second half. I think that (fifth year guard) Kevin (McCullar Jr.) was the only one who made a shot in the second half, so that obviously hurt it, but that's not where we lost the game. We lost the game because we didn’t guard."

On the foul at half court with 30 seconds left

I didn’t think it was a foul, but regardless, if it’s a good call or a bad call, it’s not irrelevant. From a coaches’ perspective, we put ourselves in that position. We could have done a much better job to do some things where that call wasn’t near as important. I’m biased, so you’re probably asking the wrong guy.
