WVU is Crushing the Transfer Portal & More Help is On the Way
West Virginia is off to a great start this offseason picking up a pair of commits from the transfer portal in Omar Silverio (Manhattan) and Kerr Kriisa (Arizona) to go along with Jose Perez (Manhattan) who transferred into the program this past season but was forced to sit out.
WVU will be the fourth school for Perez, but regardless of where he's been, he's scored the ball at a high rate averaging 15.1 points per game. His former teammate, Silverio had the best year of his career in 2021-22 with Hofstra, putting up 10.9 points and 3.3 rebounds per contest. And then the most recent addition, Kriisa, only led the PAC 12 in assists (5.2 apg) and shot 37% from three-point land this season.
The combination of those three guys has West Virginia tabbed as the sixth-best portal class this cycle, according to Evan Miyakawa, one of the most respected college basketball analytic statisticians out there. The Mountaineers sit behind LSU, Florida, Indiana, Michigan, and Arkansas. The Gators recently jumped to No. 2 following the pickup up of former Marshall center Micah Handlongten.
According to 247 Sports, West Virginia has the top-ranked portal class and according to On3, they have the fifth-best class.
And there is still some work to be done. West Virginia remains heavily active in the portal, talking with several players, and is clearly in search of adding another big to the fold. One name to keep your eyes on is former Pitt center John Hugley, who will be visiting campus from April 21st-23rd. In addition to WVU Hugley has also heard from Michigan, Oregon, Miami, Rutgers, Xavier, Arkansas, LSU, Cincinnati, Iowa State, Maryland, Georgia Tech, UCF, Wisconsin, Butler, Dayton, Ohio, Arizona State, Georgia, Duquesne, Oakland, Loyola Marymount, and Cleveland State.
