Big 12 Ranks Third Among Power Five Leagues in Revenue
A couple of years ago, the Big 12 Conference appeared to be on the verge of collapsing with Oklahoma and Texas announcing their intentions to move to the SEC. Former Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby acted quickly and reeled in BYU, Central Florida, Cincinnati, and Houston, all of which are set to join the league this summer.
The good news? The Big 12 is already in good standing revenue-wise and it's only going to get better in future years. According to Brett McMurphy of The Action Network, the Big 12 generated $480 million in the 2021-22 fiscal year, which ranks third among Power Five schools in the total revenue distributed ($42-$44.9 million per school).
Power Five distribution (per school)
1. Big Ten $58.8 million
2. SEC $49.9 million
3. Big 12 $42-$44.9 million
4. ACC $37.9-$41.3 million
5. Pac-12 $37 million
The PAC 12 is in arguably the worst position at the moment as UCLA and USC are scheduled to leave for the Big Ten and plans to replace those members have not been determined. The Big 12 has spent time looking into the idea of adding other current members of the PAC 12, which would essentially spell the end for the west coast league.
The ACC is also in bad shape as eight schools have been meeting to explore future plans that include creating their own league or joining another conference to help increase revenue.
