Jeff Hostetler + Mike Carey Set to be Hall of Famers

Two of WVU's best get the call to the Hall.

A pair of former Mountaineers are set to be inducted to the West Virginia Sports Hall of Fame this spring - Jeff Hostetler (WVU QB, 1981-83) and Mike Carey (WVU Women's Head Basketball Coach, 2001-22).

As a senior in 1983, Hostetler threw for 2,335 yards and 16 touchdowns, helping lead the Mountaineers to a 9-3 record and a win over Kentucky in the Hall of Fame Bowl. At the end of the season, he was recognized as one of top playmakers in the country, finishing 7th on the Heisman Trophy ballot.

He spent the first half of his NFL career as a backup with the New York Giants, but made his mark early leading New York to a Super Bowl victory replacing the injured Phil Simms. He became the first backup quarterback to start and win a Super Bowl.

Carey led the Mountaineers to 11 NCAA Tournaments, five WNIT appearances and a program-record 13 straight postseason appearances from 2007-19. Carey’s teams advanced to the NCAA second round on 10 occasions and reached the WNIT championship game twice.

He was named Big East Conference Coach of the Year in 2004 after posting a 21-11 overall record with a 10-6 league mark, and again in 2010 after a 29-6 season and a 13-3 Big East record. Carey garnered Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2014, when he guided the Mountaineers to a school-record 30-5 season and a 16-2 conference record.

They will be enshrined by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association at the 76th annual Victory Awards Dinner on May 7 at the Embassy Suites in Charleston.

Comments from Hostetler/Carey via WVU Athletics Communications:

"Wow, what a surprise and special honor," Hostetler said when informed of his selection. "I'm honored to join a great, special group from the state I love and where I decided to make my home."

"I was fortunate to coach my entire career in West Virginia," Carey said. "This is a great honor and I'm very proud but I have to give thanks to the Salem and WVU officials who gave me the opportunities. Eddie Pastilong (WVU Athletic Director) and David Hardesty (WVU President) took a chance on me and I had a great staff."
