2018 Position Preview: Tight Ends/Fullbacks

With the H-Back set to come back in style in Morgantown, we take a look at all the Tight Ends and Fullbacks on WVU's 2018 football roster.

Two positions that could go underappreciated by some Mountaineer fans are the Tight End and Fullback groups. With the offensive weapons surrounding Heisman hopeful Will Grier, these unsung positions could play a vital part in red zone success and possession offense.

WVU has produced two great (and very different) fullbacks in recent memory in Owen Schmitt and Elijah Wellman. Mixed in between these two bulldozers was a hybrid player in Will Johnson who could block out of the backfield, then line up on the end of the line and run crisp routes.

Looking at the positions this year, I see the H-Back coming back into style in Morgantown.

We'll first look at the guys who will be heading up this group.

Starter- Trevon Wesco (RS Sr)

Wesco heads into his senior season showing career stats of two catches for seven yards with a touchdown to his credit. He ended last season with a 2-point conversion in the Bowl game against Utah. Although not one of the more eye-popping players on the roster, Wesco has gained moderate praise for his good hands while working with QB Will Grier. Don't be surprised to see Wesco used as a receiver to help in the short passing game.

Backups- Jovanni Haskins (RS So), Elijah Drummond (RS SO), Logan Thimons (RS SO)

Haskins is a transfer from Miami who is the most athletic in this group, coming in at 6'4" and 245 lbs. With his size and athletic ability, Haskins provides a strong red zone target. If WVU follows a more traditional path with the fullback position, look for Drummond or Thimons to get those reps. Drummond -- a Bridgeport High School product -- may have the upper hand when it comes to experience, as he did get some playing time last year. Thimons has been impressive since his change from the linebacker position.

Wildcard-Jesse Beal (FR)

Beal is a 27-year-old freshman who spent 10 years playing minor league baseball after being drafted by the Baltimore Orioles. Beal provides Coach Spavital with another athletic option as he comes in at 6'6" and almost 270 lbs.

This group may not get as much press and notoriety as the rest of the offensive weapons but will be key in the high expectations on the Mountaineers this year. Here's hoping we see at least one TE/FB middle screen.
